🌕 I'm crossing you in style someday...

Moon River or the Mississippi? A paddle wheeler passes under a full moon in this photo captured in New Orleans on Aug. 22, 2021. The full moon in August is also known as the Sturgeon Moon, reaching its peak this year on the morning of Aug. 9.

In the 1930s, the Maine's Farmer's Almanac first published the Native American names for the full moons, with each Moon name connecting to the season or month it appears. According to this almanac, the Moon names for respective months from January to December are Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Worm Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon, Thunder Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon, Beaver Moon, and Long Night's Moon.

The Algonquin tribes of what is now the northeastern United States gave the August Moon its name, recognizing that sturgeon—a large fish found in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water—were more easily caught this time of year. Other names reported for this Moon include the Red Moon, the Corn or Green Corn Moon, the Barley Moon, the Herb Moon, the Grain Moon, and the Dog Moon.

There are also several names for unusual full moon types, including Blood Moons (occurring during total lunar eclipses, causing a red glow), supermoons (occurring during the moon's closest point in its orbit around Earth, causing a larger-than-usual appearance), Blue Moons (the "extra" Moon in a season with four full moons, occurring every two-and-a-half years), and Harvest Moons (the full moons occurring closest to the start of autumn).

Happy Sturgeon Moon month to all the August birthdays!
