Meet Amaya Jones—a Class of 2025 pre-medical, first-generation graduate. Amaya majored in biology and minored in Health and Human Experience, where she found a passion for advocating for underrepresented individuals in healthcare. 

"Loyola is a school where faculty, staff, and peers truly care, not just about your grades, but your story, challenges, and goals. I have grown as a scholar, leader, advocate, and person grounded in service and justice."

Within Loyola.HOB, Amaya spent time between classes at Mercy Medical Center as a student advocate and resource team coordinator. "Health Outreach Baltimore allowed me to support families in the city where I was born and raised, bridging gaps between healthcare and the social determinants that shape it. Having the ability to serve marginalized communities, often in moments of vulnerability, reshaped my perspective on healthcare and community support."

Amaya was involved in several on-campus organizations, such as LoyolaSUPHS, MosaicWOC, and the Green and Grey Society, and she also served as a resident assistant. A standout experience was the Diversity in Cancer Research Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she researched natural supplements to treat ovarian cancer. "This experience solidified my passion for addressing health inequities through research and public health initiatives. I gained a deeper appreciation for the role of inclusive research in driving social change."

Now a medical assistant at Mercy Medical Center's Maryland Spine Center, Amaya will pursue her Master's in Public Health this fall. "My goal is to become part of the 3% of African American female doctors as an obstetrician-gynecologist and researcher, using my platform to address racial and health disparities. I'm excited to continue learning, growing, and giving back during every step of this journey."
