“Will we see lions?” asked by potential visitors

“Have you seen the lions?” asked by guides with expectant visitors

The fact of the matter is that lions are THE anchor species for tourists visiting Africa. No lions = no tourists. 

And yet lion populations have plummeted, halved in the past 25 years, throughout Africa where they are threatened by habitat loss and unsustainable exploitation in the name of conservation and tourism. 

- Shoot this lion so that others may live. 

- If we develop another lodge here the lion will just hunt/rest there. 

Bogus statements by bogus people. 

How many more lions need to be shot?

How many more lions and their prey must be displaced?

Two words are getting in the way of the survival of these incredible big cats. 

#Greed #Incompetence

The young lion in this photo has an uncertain future. 

If he survives life outside of the pride he may still be deliberately lured by trophy hunters (by a bait or sound recording) to cross the shallow Luangwa River into community hunting safari areas; and if he survives the crocodiles in the crossing, he stands a good chance of being legally shot for his pelt like too many before him, or poisoned for eating domestic animals. 

Trophy hunting of lions has to stop! 

Most especially in areas where iconic photo tourism lions are being easily lured out of National Parks to be hunted. 

And over development of photo tourism in National Parks must also stop. Too many sites are being squeezed into remaining habitats by unscrupulous operators through unscrupulous means - they all know who they are; too many vehicles driven by poorly trained barely qualified guides with poor understanding and even poorer ethics. 

The remedy starts with good governance. And integrity.
