This month, on June 9th, would’ve been Skip James’ birthday and we celebrate with this cover of his song “Illinois Blues”

Known as one of the great early Mississippi bluesmen, the music of Skip James is often characterized as a genre unto itself. During his career, he developed his unique fingerpicking guitar style, with a particular kind of articulation to how he plays. 

Alternating between thumb and fingers, he was able to create dazzling counterpoints, in a way where you might almost say it shares a little more with Piedmont style than some of the Mississippi Delta blues. 

Hozier has said multiple times that James has been a big influence to him, and when you stop to think about it, you can see some of it on how he plays Jackboot Jump’s iconic riff, for example, which takes me back to James’ “I’m so glad” or how intimate and introspect every string of Hozier’s “As It Was” feels, like “Motherless & Fatherless” played by James somewhere in the 1940’, a musical conversation between their voices and a instrument that alsmost touches the edge of otherworldliness.
