REVIEW: After a weekend chock full of every bold and beautiful shade of metal brilliance, it only seems right that this year’s Bloodstock is closed out with something that takes that heaviness up another notch.
And from the moment that Gojira take up residence on the Ronnie James Dio Stage and burst into a cataclysmic ‘Only Pain’, it is clear that they are in a monolithic mood, ready to squeeze every last bit of energy out of this field.
To produce songs that feel like the tectonic plates shifting beneath you is one thing, but then to deliver them with such elegance, such poise, such undeniable passion is a whole other ball game indeed. From the marriage of the delicate and devastating that holds ‘Flying Whales’ together to the stratospheric vision of a better tomorrow that defines ‘Another World’, every beat is as bludgeoning as it is beguiling. A display that makes you stop and stare in frozen wonderment, defrosted instantly by the outrageous amount of pyro that billows across the stage.
And wow, it is loud.
Though it’s when the band pull out their astonishing version of traditional French song ‘Mea culpa (Ah! Ça ira!) that something deeper sinks in. A song so crushing that you almost forget that it was created for and performed at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, that put metal on the world stage in ways it had never been done before, it’s a lesson in what it means to be completely unapologetic in your art. In pushing whatever limits you may have, in never compromising on what you believe in and in never letting anything get in the way of what makes your heart sing.

As the spectacle is rounded out with a bone-shaking take on Black Sabbath’s ‘Under The Sun / Every Day Comes And Goes’ and an emotionally resolute ‘The Gift Of Guilt’, this is cemented as not just one of the band’s finest showings at Bloodstock from over the years, but perhaps one of their finest ever performances in the UK.
Generational. Grandiose. Gojira.
