August Burns Red, Bloodstock Festival 2025

REVIEW: August Burns Red have never done anything by halves. But in kicking off their main stage appearance at Bloodstock with their chaotic cover of System Of A Down’s ‘Chop Suey!’, they have really laid down the gauntlet. By the time that the crushing harmony of ‘Defender’ kicks in, every pair of ears in this field are well and truly pricked.
Technically, the band continue to be in a league completely of their own, every noodling solo and glorious breakdown dispatched with impeccable precision, the gloriously chaotic ‘Composure’ and atmospherically dense ‘Ghosts’ in particular showcasing just how undeniably in tune they are with each other. And in return, the ever-expanding crowd show their appreciation for such artistry, horns thrown and heads banged in abundance.
Though, as always, beyond the brutality, the band makes sure to remind everyone here just how important it is that we get to share in this chaos together.
“More grace, more compassion, more understanding,” Jake Luhrs bellows before the beautifully intricate ‘Marianas Trench’ and inspirationally clobbering ‘White Washed’ bring the curtain down, and it’s a message that lingers in the air long after the final note.
At a time where division outside of these walls is more rife than ever, revelling in the shared joy that music this gloriously heavy brings us is more paramount than ever.
As long as August Burns Red continue to be the soundtrack to that sentiment, then we are in safe hands.
