REVIEW: Through every fantastical reinvention they have undertaken over the last 25 years, one thing has remained constant for Lacuna Coil: their unwavering knack for putting on a spectacle. And from the moment that they set off over 20 confetti cannons filled with colours of the Italian flag out into the crowd assembled at the Ronnie James Dio Stage, you know that Bloodstock is no exception to that trend.
Despite the heat of the sun cooking these surroundings, the band’s atmospherically compelling brand of emotional metal feels icy cold in comparison, with the stark intent of ‘I Wish You Were Dead’ and the metalcore pummel of ‘Layers Of Time’ sending the most shivers. Christina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro continue to be a formidable duo, too, the latter delivering guttural heft with slick style and the former making every hair stand on end with some of the most opulent vocals you’re going to hear all weekend. Throw in a wondrous cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’, with a heartfelt tribute to the late great Ozzy Osbourne preceding it, and you have a set that flawlessly tows the line between sentimentality and savageness.
18 years ago, Lacuna Coil headlined Bloodstock, an achievement that, you can clearly tell, is still close to their hearts. And as ‘Never Dawn’ deals out one final mix of beauty and brutality, they have shown that no matter how much time passes, the magic that carried them all those years ago is still as potent now as it was then.
