We had so hoped to plan a special trip for Elias, something to lift his spirit and fulfill his summer trip wish. But it’s become clear that traveling more than a short distance from home is simply too risky now.
The truth is, Elias is very sick. He hasn’t been able to eat in days, and when he tries, his body can’t keep anything down. He’s growing weaker by the day, and even the smallest tasks are becoming harder for him.
Flying is no longer an option, and even long car rides feel too uncomfortable and unsafe.
Still, he talks about a summer trip with such hope, sharing his thoughts of where he wants to go and what he wants to do. We don’t take that hope from him; it’s sacred. But with tenderness, we’ve had to help him understand that his body just isn’t strong enough right now. It breaks our hearts, to carry his dreams in one hand and the weight of reality in the other, doing all we can not to dim the light that keeps him going.
Our prayer now is simply to get him to the beach, a peaceful spot nearby where we can create a bit of magic, let him feel the warmth of the sun, and have his loyal pup, Solo, by his side. Yet even that, at times, feels like an impossible dream.
