#AOL has announced it will officially shut down its dial-up internet service on September 30, 2025, marking the end of a 34-year chapter in online history. Launched in 1991, AOL’s dial-up became a gateway to the internet for millions, complete with its iconic “You’ve got mail” greeting.

The shutdown will also see the end of AOL’s Dialer software and Shield browser, both designed for older systems and slower connections.

While usage has dwindled to only a few thousand subscribers in recent years, dial-up has remained a lifeline in some rural and remote areas where high-speed broadband is scarce. The move reflects the ongoing shift toward faster, always-on internet services.
