Amy Sherald’s “Precious Futures” 🌟

asherald often chooses children and youths as subjects for her art. Full of potential with futures unwritten, the young people she paints radiate personality, whether confident, cool, or quirky.

Like all her work, these paintings include details that both speak volumes about the individuality of her subjects and remind us of broader associations or social types—the girl who loves horses, the boy who likes to fish, the kid in the hoodie. For many viewers, these attributes may suggest certain identities or character traits, and such preconceptions are often intertwined with racial biases.

What does a hoodie or an equestrian uniform symbolize to you?
Do those pictured in this gallery challenge such thoughts?

Sherald’s images of young subjects emphasize their individuality, vulnerability, and innocence. They present a rich, textured picture of childhood, one in which all children live unconstrained by the history and present-day realities of racial injustice.

See these artworks for yourself in “Amy Sherald: American Sublime” before it closes on March 9. Ticket link in bio.
