After a conversation with steve.rackham and later _h_kirkland / raggy_media about the old #Nikon D40 I found, I thought I would give it a go this morning to see what shooting on an almost 18 year old camera was like! I decided to use all auto settings, with the exception of disabling the flash. Unlike the Nikon D7500 I'm used to, changing settings on the D40 was a lot harder and more tedious, hence my decision to use auto. One exception to this was the focus, which I did manually. I also used a relatively cheap lens (Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR DX) to imitate a budget setup.

My main question was seeing if by todays standards, this camera could still take decent photos. The following photos are just of random things in our back garden, and I have included a before and after so you can see the editing. The main difference I noticed when editing the images was that I was having to increase the exposure much more than I normally do on my D7500. This could also partly be due to the auto settings on the D40.

I think my overall conclusion is if you wanted a smaller DSLR camera to shoot in auto, but then process and edit the photos later, then it should be fine. If you are like me and would much rather be able to change settings on the fly, then the D40 is not great by todays standards. The image quality/resolution was still completely fine in my opinion.

All editing was done in Adobe Lightroom Classic, and I used Adobe Photoshop to create the graphics and put the photos side by side. The first photo of the Nikon D40 was taken on my trusty D7500.
