Caring for the ever-changing needs of nearly 3,000 animals at your Toronto Zoo is an incredible team effort. In addition to their species-specific needs, special focus is given to the various life stages of each animal, as well as any special needs each individual might have. This adaptive care is exemplified by the ongoing work being done with species like the Sumatran orangutans that call your Zoo home.

Whether caring for 57-year-old Sumatran orangutan female Puppe or geriatric species like Jonah the hornbill or Amur tiger Mazy, we aim to keep all of the animals that delight Zoo guests both healthy and comfortable throughout their lives.

On this #WorldOrangutanDay, are you aware that Puppe is one of the oldest living orangutans in the world? Her current care includes regular visits from our Wildlife Health and Science team as well as adjustments to her medications, special food preparation to ensure she gets optimal nutrition, and daily guardian assessments to monitor her wellbeing.

Some small-scale recent adjustments to her care include:

🌿 Patience while shifting as she moves with more care and precision
🌿 An adorable daily pill organizer for all of her medications
🌿 Psyllium and prune juice to keep her pipes clean
🌿 Fancier enrichment for Puppe to engage with (ie. pillows, a martini glass, buckets of water)
🌿 Modifications of the firehose on habitat and in her behind-the-scenes home, making it easier for her to navigate.
🌿 Training Puppe to receive chest x-rays

It’s important to know our efforts with Puppe’s care and the Sumatran orangutan species serve a much larger purpose outside of your Toronto Zoo. We are proud to participate in both the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Sumatran orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program, which maintains a healthy, genetically diverse population of orangutans in human care, while being a program partner for the AZA Orangutan SAFE program, protecting and restoring the wild orangutan population and their habitats through public engagement, funding, and field work such as Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).
