Hi. I’m Jamey and I take photos of race cars for a living. Yes. This is my only job. And I’ve done it for more than a decade. I was JUST like you. A fan with a camera. Now this is what I do. For a job.

1) Don’t rush the process. If you’re under 18, you won’t even get credentials anyway until you’re 18. But regardless, credentials are for working photographers that have a client in that series or race, that need them to be in harms way. Yes. This is dangerous. And yes. People get hurt doing this. Every year.

2) Enjoy being a fan. Once you’re working these events, it changes everything. In good ways and bad. So be a fan. Enjoy it.

3) If motorsport photography is *really* your goal, then go as a fan and bring your camera….to as many events as you can find. I’m not talking about F1. Go to any event where there is racing or any kind. The access at bigger events (like f1) is TERRIBLE for the money you pay. Start smaller. Some events are basically free. Rack up the miles on your car. Sleep in your car. Camp. Find cheap accommodation. You can go to events on a shoe string budget. I did it. Lots of us did it. I’ve got news for you. Even at the “top” , this job isn’t glamorous. So be ready to rough it.

4) Put in the work to learn photography and UNDERSTAND photography. Lighting. Settings. The exposure triangle. What lenses to use and when to use them. Camera brands don’t matter. Lenses matter. Settings matter. Your choices you make with the settings matter. You don’t need the latest and greatest gear. I promise. You can make amazing photos on almost any camera , old or new) as long as you can change the lenses and change the settings.

5) Build up that portfolio. I see images from people all the time where they have an instagram full of images shot at the same angle and same shutter speed. Impress us. Slow shutter speeds. Fast shutter speeds. Wide angle. Telephoto. Clean compositions. Candid photos of people. Detail photos. You’re going to need to be able to do it all. And I mean ALL.

Tips 6 and 7 are in the comments. IG wouldn’t let me add more text.
