The early years of my reptile keeping were…rough. Especially for my leopard gecko, Loofah. She is albino, has very light sensitive eyes, and requires a simple setup that can be cleaned easily because she gets eye infections easily (and is blind in one eye as a result.)

Through over-lighting, unsanitisable substrate and decor, obesity, and eye infections, Loofah went through a lot and I learned a lot. But the thing is, I didn’t stop learning.

I kept her on reptile carpet when I got her in 2016. I found out that was bad and switched to sand. Found out THAT was bad and switched to slate + some loose substrate. I read and figured out she was albino and that’s why she was so sensitive to light. I battled several eye infections before switching to paper towel—and she’s had no infections since. She also has lightless heat and hunts much better with her remaining good eye now that her enclosure is dim all day. I figured out where I went wrong with her diet and she lost weight.

My point is, I made a lot of mistakes at the expense of Loofah. It was embarrassing and upsetting but I admitted them and made the necessary changes. She also has a 36x18 enclosure instead of the 20 gallon she started with despite the guides I started with saying 20 was enough. It can be hard at first to go against what you learned in the past, but it’s so worth it for our pets’ welfare.
