#therapydogthursday 🐾 Like any weekday morning, Nora was getting ready for a full day of school and soccer practice to follow. She was curling her hair with a curling iron one morning, as she often did, but that morning, she accidentally scorched her skin. Although burning her skin was shocking, what stunned her was that she felt no pain. 

Nora and her family suspected that she likely pinched a nerve while playing competitive soccer, which caused her to lose her sensation. Nora's mom, Lauren, made a appointment with a doctor - which led to numerous physical therapy visits for many months - but the numbness in her arm persisted.

It was an MRI, however, that determined the cause of numbness in her arm. Results indicated that Nora, in fact, had holocord syrinx, meaning fluid was building in the spinal cord, which was expanding and killing her nerves. If left untreated, it would eventually lead her to become paraplegic/quadriplegic. 

On the third day of recovery chp_picu after brain surgery, the nurses asked if Nora would like a visit from a therapy dog in hopes this may motivate Nora. Luckily, Canine Companions volunteer Jim Caprio and #TherapyDog Eddie, were making their weekly rounds at the hospital to bring smiles and joy - and for Nora, to share sparkles of inspiration and motivation! 

Right as Eddie entered the room, he lifted Nora's spirits, mending the aching heart of missing her own pet dogs at home. Without hesitation, she instantly reached forward to pet Eddie. During Nora’s hospital stay, Jim and Eddie made multiple visits to continue bringing Nora and her entire family laughs, happiness and positive energy. 

Nora, now a junior in high school, is out of the #hospital, and you can even see her out on the soccer field. Soccer isn't the only important element that continues to be a part of Nora's life; she still gets to see Therapy Dog Eddie, as Nora’s younger sister plays basketball with Jim’s granddaughter, where Eddie often tags along to.

Nora's mom, Lauren shares, “I am beyond grateful for Eddie. He helped my daughter in a way that medicine does not work.” 💕
