Balkh, in modern day Afghanistan, is known as one of the birthplaces of #Nowruz. 

Nowruz has a long-standing connection with Balkh. Some say another name for Nowruz is Balkh, or another name for Balkh is Nowruz. The reason is that in all historical periods from the ancient period to today when we refer to sources, we see that from the time of Cyrus the Great, from the time of Hoshang, from the time of the Achaemenid’s, Balkh or Bactria was the most important satrapy.

Regarding the foundation of Nowruz, for the first time in Balkh, historians have sited different periods and dates, with most stating it dates back to 3000 BC.

As in Indian historical texts, Balkh or Belhika is the origin of the Aryan people. Similarly, Tajiks consider themselves form the Pishdadian and Kayanian Balkh dynasty. On the other hand, this view is also reflected in Ferdowsi’s Shahnamah - he in addition to considering Balkh as the cultural and religious centre of Iranian peoples, and the great Iranian plateau, on the other hand, it ties the dynasty of kings and great empires to Balkh. Even the Sassanid government introduced the Sassanian empire and Sassan himself as one of the descendants of the Balkh kings.

It is stated in the Great Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, that Balkh’s position amongst the Aryans, was the same as the Mecca for the Arab Muslims. 

Note - H. Gershman, a French historian, considers Darius the Great, to be the son of Garshasp, the satrapy King of Balkh.
