We were inspired by ouraring's post on period essentials, so we put together a visual map of essentials for folks experiencing ADHD overwhelm.

First off, what *is* ADHD overwhelm? While it's not a recognized symptom of ADHD, living with an unmanaged mental health condition might make it more difficult to regulate your emotions. In addition, many people with ADHD experience hypersensitivity. This means they feel and experience things more deeply than other people do.

For example, people with ADHD might have big reactions to environmental stimuli, like bright lights, loud sounds, or certain textures. They may also be more sensitive to emotional stimuli, so they might have a hard time processing critical feedback or regulating their feelings during an argument.

Let's go a bit deeper into each of the essentials listed above, and remember — these are just a few suggestions of many to try to manage the overwhelm.

1. Breathwork exercises: Making time for self-care activities (especially ones you enjoy!) is important. Keeping your stress levels in check can help prevent overwhelm, and breathwork has been shown to be an excellent way to manage stress.

2. Phone reminders: Increasing your awareness about what exactly is triggering overwhelm is critical. Setting up phone reminders can be helpful for this, and learning more about how your brain responds to stress and stimulation can help you manage overwhelm before it escalates.

3. Green tea: According to a study done by nihgov, tea consumption may be an effective active treatment for adult ADHD due to the small amounts of caffeine and specifically in green tea, L-theanine.

We want to hear from you: what's helped you with managing ADHD overwhelm?
