but i’m probably going to have a lot of words anyway.

i can’t talk about these books to anyone without crying. and yeah, i cry a lot about a lot of things, but this is different. there’s something about this town and these kids that has stuck with me- i finished the series in june and am just now feeling up to even attempting to putting words down to share about it.

i love hockey but i hate so much of the culture around it and this entire series understands that so perfectly. it shows the dangers of allowing these young men to do whatever they want to whoever they want with no consequences their entire lives because they’re GOOD AT A SPORT. of what happens when those young men grow up and get to be the ones in charge. how putting the burden of forgiveness onto the survivors is so common we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

most surprisingly to me, it shows up what happens when those young men stay silent and let their teammates get away with heinous shit and how terribly they’re treated when they do decide to go against everyone else and speak up. which is the perfect segue for me to tell you about one of my favorite characters in all of literature: benjamin ovich. if you ask me about benji i will immediately begin to cry while simultaneously listing every reason benji deserves the world. reading his journey from book one to three and seeing him grow made me so fuckin’ proud, but it was incredibly bittersweet. backman literally told me from book one how benji’s story would go, and i lived in denial anyway. i love that kid like he is my own.

this tiny town in the middle of the forest in sweden is one that will stick with me for years to come.
