In Mar, I tried to capture the balance of the sea lovingly held by the sun. The work plays with tension and harmony between two opposites, celebrating both their contrast and their unity. Like the larger Mar y Sol series, it reflects on the beauty I see in the cycles of life and death, something deeply connected to my own journey.

I often return to the influence of my mother, Marisol. Her name carries the poetry of mar (sea), y (and), and sol (sun). That translation of “sea and sun” became a guiding symbol for me. Her encouragement shaped my path as an artist, and her passing became both a wound and a transformation, the spark that pushed me deeper into my practice. Mar continues that exploration, turning memory into light, water, and radiance on canvas.

What feels most distinctive here is the depth of its blue: ultramarine. This pigment, made from lapis lazuli mined only in Afghanistan, was once more precious than gold. Renaissance artists treasured it like something sacred, often pleading with patrons to fund it separately. Vermeer, captivated by its brilliance, used it lavishly in works like Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Virgin in Prayer, even when he could hardly afford bread.

Today, blue surrounds us so completely that it’s easy to forget its history. By invoking ultramarine in Mar, I wanted to honor it as both prayer and sacrifice, a thread of devotion carried by artists through centuries. Set against gilded light, the painting becomes an offering, an intimate meeting of sea and sun, memory and presence, sorrow and joy.
