Meet Yasodha Gopal, Associate Dean of Students for Health & Wellbeing, in the latest installment of We Are Reed!
 
“I’m the Associate Dean of Students for Health & Wellbeing, which means that I oversee the Health and Counseling Center; SHARE, which stands for Sexual Health, Advocacy, and Relationship Education; and the Athletics, Fitness, and Outdoor Programs. That’s a big umbrella, and we aspire to weave wellbeing into everything that we do on campus. I think of my work in terms of person, place, and planet. 
 
“Before coming to Reed, I practiced pediatric and adolescent medicine for over 25 years. My shift into higher education was born out of the pandemic. So many of my patients were experiencing this existential angst, where everything they knew to be certain had become uncertain. And I just thought: this is my chance to combine my experience in medicine with a college population that I am really passionate about serving, during a time of great need. I feel so lucky to be at Reed, where wellbeing is truly a priority, and I look forward to co-creating a holistic vision for wellbeing on campus.
 
“I really enjoy meeting with students one-on-one. Sometimes students will be seeking guidance related to health and wellbeing, or they’re feeling like they aren’t aware of the resources available to them, or they're just going through a tough time. In my experience, Reedies are incredibly caring, courageous, and compassionate. And I love when students keep me updated about their lives. For example, maybe I’ll meet with someone who is struggling, and then time passes and they send me a one-sentence note that says, ‘I turned in my thesis today,’ and that is a joy I get to share with them.
 
“I started at Reed a little over a year ago, and my favorite memory is from when I first came to campus to interview. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and there were students in the Quad painting these large barrels for a clothing drive. I was so excited. To see this beautiful campus, this beautiful naturescape, combined with such passionate creativity and community service. I thought, wow, okay, this is definitely the place I want to be.”
