Meet Robin in our latest Senior Spotlight!

Robin is a history major and English minor from Wilmette, Illinois, and La Crescenta, California. Her thesis is about natural history museums and taxidermy. Looking at the period from roughly 1850–1920, Robin is examining the interaction of colonization and empire in relation to the collection and display of animals at the Field Museum in Chicago. Specifically, she is looking at Carl Akeley’s time as chief taxidermist to develop an argument for the hidden history of the politicization, fetishization, and exploitation of large mammals at the museum. 

Robin’s thesis adviser is Professor of History and Humanities Mary Ashburn Miller, and her expertise in the history of science has provided Robin with a great foundation from which to build. Robin has also worked closely with Josh Howe, associate professor of history and environmental studies, whose environmental history classes influenced Robin to change her major from English to history and affected her whole Reed experience. 

Outside of her thesis, Robin has hosted a radio show on Reed’s student-run radio station, KRRC, since her first year. She loves having an hour a week to play whatever music she wants and hang out with her friends at the station. Robin also edits the Reed history department’s quarterly newsletter, Olde News, and enjoys connecting with current and past students and faculty to spread information and share a love of history. 

Robin’s time at Reed would not have been the same without the college’s strong and supportive community. She met the majority of her friends during Orientation week her first year and they have pushed her to grow and learn as much as possible in her four years at Reed. She feels excited and prepared for the world beyond!
