Meet Sustainability Coordinator Rachel Willis in the newest installment of We Are Reed (and follow @sustainablereed )!

“In my role as Sustainability Coordinator, I work with a team of 11 students. We do everything from managing the vegetable garden and orchard to running the Swap Shop to compiling data for Reed’s first greenhouse gas inventory. The coolest thing about my work is that it touches on so many different areas of the college: academics, operations, student life. 

“Because sustainability has a role to play in every part of Reed, I get to connect with so many people. For example, I recently met with two Reed librarians and a professor to start a sustainability book club and bring speakers to campus. And the day before that I met with the Gray Fund coordinators to plan events for Earth Day. It’s going to be Reed’s first Earth Day blowout celebration.

“The best part of my job is collaborating with students. The 11 students I work with are just dynamite. They’re so eager to do this work. My position is new—it was created in 2022, and I’ve been here a little over a year. And it’s really the team aspect that has allowed us to move at a rate that wouldn’t be possible if it had just been me alone for my first year.

“Sustainability is all about interconnection and finding creative solutions that bridge people together. The on-campus gardens are a good example. Students want to build a sense of connection to this place that’s going to be their home for the next four years, and they get to do that by growing food and participating in the process from start to finish. And then that food goes back into feeding our community through the Reed Community Pantry.

“Something that I love so much about this role is how much support there is for sustainable action. My on-campus partners are like, ‘Oh, you want to start a Swap Shop where clothes can be sorted, cleaned, and redistributed? Cool. There are some barriers, and here’s how we have to address those.’ Or, ‘You want to expand the garden? Go for it.’ And so I think that as long as I have the energy and can demonstrate the impact, Reed is ready to support my team’s ideas and say yes.”
