Meet Trina Paniagua, one of our wonderful financial aid counselors, in the latest installment of We Are Reed:

“I’m a financial aid counselor and I’ve been in my role for six and a half years. I ensure the accuracy of financial aid documents, determine eligibility for different types of aid, and help students and families navigate the process. One of the things I love most about my job is that I’ve been here so long that I really know what I’m doing. 

“In an average day, I spend a good chunk of time handling financial aid questions, whether that’s answering emails or phone calls or talking to walk-ins. If you’re a prospective student, one thing I really want you to know is that Reed is within your reach. If you take a look at the cost of tuition and you’re like ‘I love Reed, but it’s impossible for my family,’ I want you to know that it isn’t impossible. We have an amazing financial aid program.

“Our financial aid program is need-based, which makes it more clear-cut and obvious. It’s not somebody behind the curtain deciding who gets a merit-based scholarship and who doesn’t. If you are admitted to Reed, you have merit. What we’re really looking at is need. We’re one of very few schools to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all students for all four years.

“My favorite place on campus is Growing Seeds—it’s a preschool where a lot of staff and faculty send their kids. It’s where my son went to school, and I have great memories of picking him up at the end of the day or sometimes even running into him when the teachers at Growing Seeds would take the class on mini field trips. He’s six years old now, but when he was little it was so nice that my work and his school could be so closely tied together.

“The last thing I want to say is that everyone who works here wants you to succeed. That means everyone who’s part of the financial aid office. All of your professors. Everyone. It’s a really welcoming and supportive place.”
