Meet Shishei Tsang, SEEDS Program Director, as she describes the work she does at Reed.

“I’m the program director for SEEDS, which stands for Students for Education, Equity, and Direct Service. The big idea is that we facilitate community engagement.

“SEEDS offers service opportunities in the local community. For example, we host a PE class where students get credit for biking to Portland’s Community Cycling Center and volunteering there. We also run an internship program that lets students work off campus with one of our nonprofit partners, either to receive federal work-study or for PE credit.

“Then there’s the Collective Voices Series where we invite community partners to come to campus and talk about their work. And, lastly, we run the Reed Community Pantry. So, yeah, that’s a lot of things under the SEEDS umbrella, but it’s not just me—I work with a group of amazing students and we do all of these things together.

“I like to give the SEEDS student staff a chance to explore their role so that they can tell me what they want to do within their area. And then we work together to see what we can create. It’s this type of collaboration that lets SEEDS have all of these different components. And I think that’s what makes the program unique. Because ‘helping’ is a very big word, right? And SEEDS gives students so many different ways to be involved with the community.

“I’ve been in my role for a little over a year, and my favorite part of the day is when I get to work at the Community Pantry. What I love about the pantry is that it directly benefits community members. It’s a place where students, staff, and faculty can get food and supplies at no cost. And it’s fun because I get to do the shopping and budgeting. It’s like solving a puzzle: how can I maximize the budget to help the most people?

“My favorite time of year on campus is when the cherry trees bloom in spring. Everywhere you walk there are flowers and petals. And it’s right here. It’s my workplace. That’s a pretty good feeling—connecting students to the Portland community and doing my work in such a beautiful place.”
