It’s another entry in We Are Reed! Meet Megan Simón, Operations Coordinator for the Office of Student Engagement, as she describes the work she does at Reed.

“I'm the Operations Coordinator for Student Engagement, which means I do a ton of things. I manage the operations for the Student Center, help with Student Engagement programming, advise clubs and organizations, and oversee move-in. I’ve been in my current role for two years, though prior to this I spent two years working in Reed’s Office of Student Life.

“In terms of what I love about my work, my favorite thing is having students knock on my door with a need or idea. For example, I had a student come in last year with the idea for a fish tank in the Student Center. And afterwards I got to go to my boss and say, ‘I agreed to put a hundred-gallon saltwater fish tank in the Student Center, I hope that’s okay.’ 

“I also help with event programming. One of my ideas was the pop-up flower shop where students can put together a free bouquet. The first few iterations involved donated flowers from Fred Meyer and Trader Joe’s. And it was so cool to take all of these perfectly fine flowers that would've been tossed and use them for the shop. It's such a simple idea—giving students the opportunity to make bouquets for people they appreciate—but it just brings so much joy to campus. 

“The beginning and end of the academic year are my favorite times at Reed. I manage move-in each August, so I get to be one of the first people to welcome new students. I love parents asking a million questions and I love students being like “Shhhh, mom!” and I love meeting all of these new Reedies and wondering how they’ll add to our campus community. Because we really are a community. And part of being a community is celebrating the work of our graduating seniors at the end of the year, which is another special time. 

“My favorite place on campus is my office. I came late to a career in higher education and before Reed I always worked the front desk. So having this space that is just my own is really special. Students can feel safe when they're in here working with me. It's like a little sanctuary. It's like a little happy place.”
