Announcing a brand new series! In “We Are Reed: Stories from the Stronghold,” we’ll introduce members of our community who will tell you, in their own words, what they do at Reed and why they love it. First up is Zac Perry, Grounds Supervisor and long-time Canyon Restoration Manager.

“I’m the Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor, and I’ve been at Reed for 23 years. I spent 17 years restoring the Reed canyon and then stepped into a leadership role to lead the Grounds crew. Recently, I was asked to support the Maintenance team and bring these two departments closer together. On Grounds, we do everything we can to provide beautiful surroundings that are also highly functional. Our work includes maintaining the health of trees, lawns, shrubs that support native pollinators, and the 28-acre wildlife refuge at the center of campus.

“The most constant joy that I have in my role is connecting with the community. I’ve had the opportunity to be here so long that students, neighbors, and alumni will come back to campus and tell me about how this space has inspired them to do better in their communities. It’s easy to forget how many people see and use this campus every day, and how the work we do impacts more people than just those enrolled in formal education.

“I can’t imagine that there are a lot of schools that put as many resources as Reed does towards supporting their community members. It’s obviously touted very much for students, but it’s also true for staff. I've always felt very supported by the college, and that is why I'm still here. I feel that if I worked for a larger institution, there’d be less opportunity for staff to engage with students and faculty, but at Reed, these interactions are just woven into my day.

“My favorite spot on campus is the canyon. I’ve spent so much time down there and built all the trails and benches. I’ve seen deer in the canyon, I’ve seen a mink once. To watch the otter at play is really exciting, no matter how many times I see it. But I think the thing that brings me the most pleasure is seeing the beavers, because they were the original engineers of the canyon long before I was here.”
