Time for another Senior Spotlight!

Andrew (he/him) is an environmental studies-economics major from Saint Paul, Minnesota. As a Hmong American and first-generation American, he was ecstatic to get the opportunity to move to Portland, Oregon, and attend Reed.

His thesis explores a sweet treat enjoyed by many... chocolate! He is looking at corporate social responsibility and how companies in the chocolate industry respond to sustainability initiatives related to the chocolate supply chain. His thesis adviser is Professor of Economics Noelwah Netusil, whose work focuses on environmental economics. Andrew couldn't have made it this far without the support of Noelwah, who taught his Natural Resources Economics class and also serves as his academic adviser.

Andrew was interested in many different subjects when he first came to Reed, and he originally planned to major in biology. However, his love for interdisciplinary work spurred him to combine the natural and social sciences by majoring in environmental studies with a concentration in economics. This combination may seem odd to some, but to Andrew it expresses the undeniable influence that these two fields have on one another.

Outside of the classroom, Andrew has worked in the Office of Admission, been a peer mentor, served as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Environmental Studies, and researched the experiences of first-year Reedies for Student Life and Institutional Research. His interest in finance and economics has led to his involvement in the Finance and Investment Club, and he has demonstrated his love for music during his shows on Reed's student-run radio station, KRRC.

Andrew's favorite thing about Reed is the community. Reedies are some of the most interesting people he has ever met, because everyone brings something to the table. He wants prospective students to know that they will never be bored and that they can definitely find their place here because of the vibrant community.
