Get excited for another Senior Spotlight!

Arielle (she/her) is an environmental studies-chemistry major from San Diego, California. Her thesis focuses on chemical tracers found in ice cores from southwest Canada that can help us better understand the history of forest fires in the area over the past 1000 years. Arielle is using different data analysis techniques to map out the fire coverage and analyze the history.

Arielle is glad to have chosen an interdisciplinary major that allows her so many opportunities to apply different learning methods to a variety of fields. From an inorganic chemistry course to a class on comparative politics, she enjoys integrating subjects to gain an even deeper understanding of the issue as a whole.

Arielle’s thesis advisor is Professor Mackenzie Grieman. Mackenzie has done a lot of work with ice cores, including traveling with a research team to Antarctica to take and analyze a sample. Arielle is grateful for Mackenzie’s vast and detailed knowledge about ice cores and appreciates how encouraging she has been during the thesis process.

During her time at Reed, Arielle has researched the air quality in Bahrain and Kuwait in order to find the source of greenhouse gas emissions and worked as a research assistant for Professor Julie Fry. She has also experimented with a molecular gastronomist to make hempseed-based tofu that would offer a more sustainable alternative to tofu made from soy. Arielle was able to spend a summer experimenting with hempseed thanks to Reed’s Summer Opportunity Fellowship Award, which gives students funding to pursue working with a mentor at another institution.

Arielle’s favorite thing about Reed is the growth that students experience from taking a wide range of courses and collaborating with their peers. She loves seeing how her own interests have changed over time due to exposure to different courses, people, and ways of thinking.
