Our next book recommendation comes from Zack Siy ’23. Zack is recommending “Time Is a Mother,” a poetry collection by Ocean Vuong:

“Time Is a Mother” is the sophomore poetry collection of Ocean Vuong, a Vietnamese American immigrant writer and one of the most prominent poets of our generation. Throughout the collection, Vuong touches on topics such as immigrant identities and relationships, queerness in America, and love in spite of (and beyond) death. Prior to this book’s release, Vuong was already one of my favorite poets, and I thus highly anticipated his new collection of work. 

As an Asian American poet and immigrant myself, Vuong’s writing is very close to my heart for a number of reasons. Many of the topics he covers are relatable to me in a way that is often untranslatable, yet Vuong handles them with such precision that he makes my own experiences more recognizable. In this capacity, I have found “Time Is a Mother” to be a beautiful experiment in literature’s unique potential to elucidate the permeable nature of the human condition. 

“Time Is a Mother” represents a touching new addition to the still relatively young canon of Asian American poetry. As I enter my final year at Reed, I am preparing to write my thesis as an English major on the creative track, which will hopefully allow me to someday make my own addition to this canon. From this intersection of identity, creativity, and potential, I am grateful for the insight and care that have become characteristic of Vuong’s ever-growing body of work, and excited to see where it takes him in the future.
