On August 21, 2013, the Assad regime carried out one of the deadliest chemical weapons attacks of the 21st century. In the early hours of the morning, rockets armed with the nerve agent sarin struck the opposition-held neighborhoods of Eastern and Western Ghouta, just outside Damascus.

Within minutes, hundreds of civilians began choking to death in their homes and in the streets. Victims, many of them children, showed clear signs of nerve agent exposure: suffocation, convulsions, blurred vision, and frothing at the mouth. Hospitals were overwhelmed as entire families were rushed in with no visible injuries, but already lifeless. By the end of the day, more than 1,144 people were killed, including 426 children, simply because they breathed.

Independent investigations, including those by Human Rights Watch and the United Nations, traced the rockets to Syrian government military positions. The weapons used, Soviet-era 140mm rockets and larger Syrian-made 330mm rockets designed to carry chemical payloads, were never in the hands of opposition forces. The evidence overwhelmingly pointed to Assad’s forces as the perpetrators of this atrocity.

For years, the world remembered the victims but was unable to act. Assad denied responsibility and continued to rule with impunity.

Today, twelve years later, and on the first anniversary since Assad’s fall, remembrance must mean more than mourning. It must mean accountability.
