For two years, cinematographer Tom Rowland braved the swamp jungles of North Sumatra to film 'Secret Lives of Orangutans' on #Netflix and Silverback Films. The world’s first feature-length film on wild orangutans follows Ellie, her newborn Emen, daughter Eden, and their treetop neighbors in the most intimate portrait of the species yet. The film went on to earn eight 2025 Daytime Emmy nominations—including Best Cinematography for Tom and his team.

Filming meant battling treacherous swamp terrain, torrential rain, relentless insects, and elusive subjects high in the canopy. Patience and precision were essential; some days yielded only three usable shots. A standout moment came when a dominant male toppled five massive rotting trees while defending his favorite female.

To handle the Canon 50–1000mm lens (often paired with a 2x TLS doubler) while shooting 8K in harsh jungle conditions, Tom relied on the lightweight and durable RED HELIUM. Despite 100% humidity, heavy rain, and swamp hazards, it never failed in the field.

The team worked closely with the Suaq Orangutan Project, whose research and access made the film possible: https://suaq.org/donation/
