For three decades, Rosie, the Chilean rose hair tarantula, has been one of Butterfly Pavilion’s most beloved ambassadors. Since 1995, she’s welcomed millions of guests, helping people overcome fears, spark curiosity, and discover the beauty of invertebrates.
Now, Rosie is ready for a new chapter. Beginning September 8, Rosie will transition from our public handling experience to a dedicated exhibit home on display for all to still visit, where she can continue inspiring visitors. This doesn’t mean that Rosie and Goldie are going away for good, rather, they're trading the palm of your hand for thoughtfully designed spaces where they can be observed and celebrated on exhibit.
“The science around ambassador animal care has evolved, and Butterfly Pavilion is evolving with it” said Sara Stevens, Director of Animal Collections. “As our tarantulas age, current science tells us that reducing handling is key to their wellbeing. This transition reflects the highest standards in ambassador animal care.”
In her three decades at Butterfly Pavilion, Rosie has changed hearts and minds. She’s helped countless guests see spiders not as creatures to fear, but as vital members of our ecosystems. In the months ahead, we’ll be introducing new invertebrate experiences that offer close-up, interactive learning while prioritizing animal wellbeing – including a brand-new exhibit in spring 2026.
We invite you to share your memories using #ThanksRosie, and join us in celebrating the next chapter of an extraordinary animal who’s touched so many lives. Click the link in our bio to submit your own photos of holding Rosie, or go to butterflies.org/rosies-next-chapter/ to learn more.
