A BLUE, CRIMSON AND PURPLE MATCHUP: Yesterday evening the freshman, junior varsity and varsity football teams played in a three-way scrimmage against the Austin High Maroons and the LBJ Jaguars at Nelson Field. Given that it was a rare matchup of three schools at one time, the coaches creatively planned the games as follows. The freshmen and JV teams played at the same time, splitting the 100-yard football field into 50-yard half sections which allowed all teams to play each other in ten minute increments of individual offense and defense. The field was expanded back to regulation size for the varsity game where each team played in 15 minute increments. Splitting the game into periods for purely the offensive or defensive players to take the field allowed for each of the three teams to play each other in every possible matchup.

The Knights entered the varsity game prepared from many weeks of practice, holding 6A Austin High to zero touchdowns. The McCallum defense was also able to secure two interceptions against the Maroons.

The Knights' other opponent, the LBJ Jaguars are a 4A school known for their athletic talent, speed and strength. Despite the fight that the Jaguars put up against the Knights, a rushing touchdown was completed by senior Wyatt Mayes.

Mayes, who was playing at running back when he scored, is new to the football program at McCallum, but wanted to take a hold of the responsibility he’s been given.
“It feels great to come in my senior year and be trusted with a role,” Mayes said. “I know I have a lot to prove, but I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’ve always loved watching football.”
Scoring against a reputable team like LBJ was rewarding for Mayes, and it made him want to see what else the team can achieve this upcoming season.
