I’ve visited Colombia 3 times and most recently spent 3 weeks in Cartagena— needless to say I have a deep appreciation for the country! Some tips:

1. Colombia is a large country whose mountainous topography makes traveling by land challenging. If you’re short on time but want to hit up multiple cities, flying domestically makes the most sense. Viva Air, Avianca, and LATAM are all decent and affordable airline options— you can fly from Cartagena to Bogota (the capital) for around $50 USD.

2. Only visiting Cartagena? Fly there nonstop from major North American cities like NYC, Miami, Toronto & Montreal.

3. Colombia has many distinct and diverse regions. If you want beaches and laid back, tropical vibes, head to cities on the Caribbean coast like Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Santa Marta. Into cosmopolitan cities with lots of culture? Bogota and Medellin are probably more your thing. And if you want to explore the coffee region and check out some crazy landscapes, Salento, Valle de Cocora, and the surrounding areas are not to be missed.

4. $1 USD is about 4600 Colombian Pesos & your money goes a long way. We rarely paid $15 USD per person for a sit-down dinner, even in the expensive, touristy restaurants within Cartagena’s old town, and rarely paid more than $5 USD for even the longest Uber rides around town.

5. While you can get around most major cities without speaking a ton of Spanish, knowing the basics goes a long way. When all other communication fails, Google Translate is your friend!

6. Unless you’re in the market or buying something from a street vendor, you can pretty much use your credit card everywhere. However, most places don’t accept AMEX, so make sure to pack your Mastercard/ Visa.

7. Forget what you heard about Colombia being d@ngerous for tourists (especially if you live in/ visit most major U.S. cities without fear).
