New York’s theatre world is preparing for a hauntingly glamorous revival. Titled Masquerade, this fresh reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary Phantom of the Opera promises not just a retelling, but a full transformation of the Broadway classic. Opening this July in Manhattan, the production is staged in the former Lee’s Art Shop — a space reborn into an immersive dreamscape of music, masks and mystery.

What sets this version apart is its intimate format; unlike traditional stagings, Masquerade invites the audience to move freely throughout a labyrinth of scenes — from decadent rooftop waltzes to the Phantom’s shadowed underground lair. Guiding the aesthetic is Nicola Formichetti, celebrated for his visionary work with Lady Gaga. His appointment as mask director brings an avant-garde flourish, blending Belle Époque elegance with modern subculture. Think mirrored masks, theatrical silhouettes, and whispered danger.

Costume designer Emilio Sosa, alongside Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus, breathes new life into iconic characters.
