Former NCT Member Moon Taeil Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Aggravated Sexual Assault.

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the K-pop industry, former NCT member Moon Taeil has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for his involvement in the aggravated sexual assault of an intoxicated foreign woman in Seoul. The Seoul Central District Court delivered the verdict on July 10, 2025, following Taeil’s admission of guilt alongside two co-defendants, identified by their surnames Hong and Lee.

The incident occurred in June 2024, when the trio met the victim at a bar in Itaewon and took her to a residence in Bangbae-dong, where she was assaulted while unconscious. Despite the prosecution’s request for a seven-year sentence, the court considered mitigating factors, including the defendants’ lack of prior criminal records and the victim’s expressed disinterest in pursuing punishment.

In addition to the prison term, the court mandated that the defendants complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program, publicly disclose their personal information, and face a five-year employment ban in institutions involving children or adolescents.
Taeil’s release is expected in January 2029, assuming full sentence completion without parole.

Public reaction has been one of outrage, with many criticising the perceived leniency of the sentence and raising concerns over the handling of sexual assault cases involving celebrities in South Korea.

Taeil’s departure from NCT was confirmed by SM Entertainment in August 2024, with his contract officially terminated in October 2024.

This case underscores the ongoing need for accountability and stronger protections for victims within both the entertainment industry and society at large.
