On July 3, 2025, the South Korean Supreme Court upheld a suspended sentence for actor Yoo Ah In (real name Uhm Hong Sik), concluding a protracted legal saga that has captivated the nation and cast a shadow over the entertainment industry.

Yoo was convicted of habitual drug use, specifically the illegal administration of propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and remimazolam under the guise of cosmetic procedures. Between September 2020 and March 2022, he reportedly received these substances 181 times. Additionally, from May 2021 to August 2023, he illegally obtained approximately 1,100 sleeping pills using another person’s name on 44 occasions.

The court’s decision resulted in a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with a fine of 2 million won (approximately 1,470). This final ruling followed an appeal that reduced the initial sentence, taking into account Yoo’s sleep disorders and his commitment to rehabilitation.

Despite the controversy, Yoo’s film “The Match,” co-starring Lee Byung Hun, achieved box office success upon its release in April 2025, grossing over14.1 million and securing a 7.72% share of the market. However, his role in the second season of the acclaimed series “Hellbound” was rescinded, and his future in the industry remains uncertain.
