“Skyler Cassity, North Texas defensive coordinator: In one year at Sam Houston, Cassity improved the Bearkats from 90th in yards per play allowed to 13th, and the team won 10 games in its second FBS season. The 2016 Auburn grad and Texas native took the UNT job over others in order to stay in Texas, and he takes over a Mean Green defense that has been troubled for years. If he executes a similar turnaround, P4 schools will come calling.”

What the article doesn’t mention is that Coach Cassity was a quarterback at Riverwood until his playing career was cut short by a genetic condition requiring surgery. Raider Football Head Coach Robert Ingram wanted to continue utilizing Cassity’s eye for the game and motivational coaching skills, so he made him a coach for the team. Cassity spent his final two years of high school on the sideline reading plays, recommending adjustments, and helping run practice.

That early coaching position led to a student coaching and recruiting position at Auburn University, where Cassity earned a degree in business administration. He later received a master’s degree in sports management at Texas Tech University, where he continued working as a Graduate Assistant Football Coach. In 2023, while working as the Defensive Coordinator for Abilene Christian University, Coach Cassity was named one of just 15 college coaches from around the state of Texas recognized by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football publication for its annual 40 Under 40 Award.
