National Guardsmen were seen armed with weapons on the boardwalk of The Wharf in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. A military official told CBS News earlier in the day that some members of the Guard would be armed starting tonight.

The step is an escalation in Pres. Trump’s takeover of policing in the nation’s capital and comes as nearly 2,000 National Guard members are stationed in the city, with the arrival last week of hundreds of troops from several Republican-led states.
