Meet Baylee DeSmit, '25, an Elementary Education major within Loyola_Education who split her time between the classroom and the soccer field as a midfielder on LoyolaWSoc!

On the LoyolaHounds women’s soccer team, Baylee was named PatriotLeague Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, among other honors, and finishing in the top 10 nationally in goals per game in 2024. "Playing four years on a team means every year is a chance to get better and improve, and you get four years of meeting people who will become lifelong friends. Soccer has impacted my future by teaching me life lessons and having the mentality to take one day at a time and make the most out of it."

Along with the lessons she learned on the field, Baylee gained hands-on experience as a student teacher in local elementary schools. "Student teaching at Loyola allowed me to assist, teach, and observe multiple subjects from many teachers. My favorite part of the field experience was my senior year internship. It was an amazing opportunity to teach full-time and make connections with students that I will always remember."

Since Commencement, Baylee has continued her soccer journey, joining Sporting_JAX—a new professional soccer team in Jacksonville, Florida, competing in the GainbridgeSuperLeague. She is "very excited to be a part of the inaugural season for this new club."

When her soccer career comes to a close, Baylee looks forward to returning to the classroom as an elementary school teacher. "I love working with students to help them grow their minds and learn something new. Seeing students persevere through something challenging and finally understand it is amazing. Loyola has shaped me. It's a place that makes you better and encourages you to do your best."
