California has officially declared “Soju Day” to celebrate Korea’s traditional liquor.

On the 25th (local time), California State Senator Steven Choi’s office and local industry reps hosted a proclamation ceremony at the State Capitol in Sacramento, inviting soju brands and community leaders. Starting this year, September 20 will be celebrated annually as Soju Day across the state.

The resolution, introduced by Senator Choi, aims to promote respect for Korean culture and highlight the contributions of the Korean-American community to California’s multicultural identity. “Soju is a symbol of Korea’s heritage and community, as well as a bridge for cultural exchange,” he said.

Korean companies selling soju in the U.S. noted that the growing popularity of fruit soju—especially among younger locals—helped pave the way for this resolution. Industry data shows that the U.S. fruit soju market has grown at an annual rate of over 30% in the past five years, and American liquor companies have also jumped in, producing their own fruit-flavored soju-style drinks.

Might have to celebrate by watching "Soju Rhapsody" on Netflix tonight. 😉
