HAITI IN AUGUST 🇭🇹 Part I - Postcards of the Palais
📍 Palais Sans-Souci, Milot, Acul-du-Nord, Haiti

Built under the reign of King Henri Christophe, through the strength and sacrifice of the people, with the vision of Baron Pompée Valentin de Vastey, royal secretary and architect of the palace. Its name is tied to Jean-Baptiste Sans Souci, the revolutionary leader killed here by Christophe, a reminder that the palace rose as both monument and message.

While the 1842 earthquake left the palace never fully rebuilt, it holds an enduring presence of energy, dignity, and historical weight. Being at this site in the Nord Department as dyaspora, it was natural to reflect on the told and untold, the good and challenging stories of my people’s fight for independence through and after 1804, and on the unfinished vision of a fully free Haiti.

These unfinished visions, shared by both natif natal and dyaspora, are shaped by the strength and cultural legacies of our people, by Haiti’s own challenges and truths, and by the weight of neocolonialism and global powers that have long interfered in its path. From the North to the South departments, with the varying realities they each hold, all of this deepens the question within our people of what a truly free Haiti looks like in our world today. Haiti continues to live, create, shine, and be cherished by millions, even as that collective vision and reality of freedom remains a journey still unfolding each day.

Photographed by Jordan Dubreuil in August, the month the Haitian Revolution began in 1791.
