Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights 2007 – Jack the Clown. This video was displayed across multiple areas of the park and also served as the “hold” video for the Studio Tour’s Terror Tram during the 2007 event.

“There are some places where evil is born… and others that were born evil. The Bates Motel. Camp Crystal Lake. The Hewitt House. 1428 Elm Street. It was terrifying enough that Jack Schmidt believed these places were real. What would be even scarier… is if he was right.”

Halloween Horror Nights returned to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2007 with Ringmaster Jack Schmidt unleashing his twisted Carnival of Carnage on the Universal Backlot. To make his nightmare a reality, he summoned the Carnage Killers—Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface—transforming the park into a midway of madness. This was the first year Hollywood and Orlando shared the same overall theme, though Orlando’s carnival storyline was more developed. It was also the last year Hollywood borrowed an Icon from Orlando, as Creative Director John Murdy later shifted toward creating original characters unique to Hollywood’s event.

The event’s storyline followed Jack, a horror-obsessed madman arrested on Halloween night 2006 after attacking guests at Universal. Confined to Shadybrook Asylum, he later escaped and sent postcards from iconic horror landmarks, including the Bates Motel, Camp Crystal Lake, and Elm Street. Believing Universal’s backlot to be the birthplace of horror itself, Jack announced his Carnival of Carnage, summoning Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, and other freaks to terrorize the masses.

Marketing for the event leaned heavily on Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface, with Jack himself appearing sparingly. Posters and ads often depicted the three slashers together or separately, while much of the promotional campaign was reused from Orlando. The television commercial, directed by Dean Karr, featured a man entering a fortune teller’s tent, where the Carnage Killers were revealed before Ringmaster Jack appeared to summon them in a brutal finale.

The attractions were headlined by several haunted mazes. A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy’s Nightmare (Shrek 4D Queue) saw Freddy raising an army of the insane at Westin Hills Asylum. Friday the 13th: Camp Blood (Wild Wild West Stage) returned guests to the ruins of Crystal Lake, where Jason awaited. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Back in Business (Mummy Queue) featured Leatherface and his family operating the condemned Blair Meats factory. Universal’s House of Horrors (year-round venue) showcased classic Universal Monsters and horror icons. The Terror Tram: Horror Comes Home guided guests into the Hacklot, where Whoville, the Bates Motel, and War of the Worlds sets were transformed, culminating in Jack feeding victims into a wood chipper.

Scarezones included Zombie Invasion (New York Street), Deadwood (Western Street), Haunted London (Baker Street), The Black Death (French Street), and HellBilly Hoedown (Lower Lot). Live shows featured Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure (Fear Factor Stage), Dark Magic and Dirty Tricks (Animal Actors Stage), Chucky’s Insult Emporium (French Street Patio), and Slaughter World 2 (Waterworld Stage). Select rides also operated during the event, including Jurassic Park: In the Dark, Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride, and Terminator 2: 3D.

Though Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface dominated the spotlight, 2007 was a pivotal year for Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood. It marked the first time Orlando and Hollywood shared a thematic storyline, but also the last year Hollywood borrowed Orlando’s Icons. Jack Schmidt’s Carnival of Carnage, together with the Carnage Killers, solidified 2007 as one of the most infamous events in the park’s history, paving the way for Hollywood to develop its own unique legacy in the years that followed.
