Opening in 1999—ten years before Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009—the island features bold, comic-inspired architecture with vivid colors, exaggerated angles, and larger-than-life cutouts of iconic characters. It is home to four attractions, including the fan-favorites The Incredible Hulk Coaster and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. Origins as “DC Superhero Land” Originally, the land was envisioned as “DC Superhero Land,” capitalizing on the success of Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). In the early 1990s, MCA Inc. (then the owner of Universal Pictures and Universal Destinations & Experiences) entered negotiations with Warner Bros. for the theme park rights to DC Comics as part of its planned “second gate” project, Cartoon World (later renamed Islands of Adventure). However, the deal collapsed when Time Warner acquired Six Flags in 1990, securing the DC rights for its own parks. Disputes over royalty payments between Warner Bros. and MCA further ensured the partnership never came to fruition. The Marvel Agreement While the DC deal failed, Universal turned to Marvel Entertainment, which had been licensing its characters’ film rights to various studios. On March 22, 1994, MCA and Marvel signed a landmark agreement granting Universal theme park rights to the Marvel characters. The contract stipulated that MCA would build a full “Marvel Universe” area with attractions, shops, and dining, and—importantly—it was written to remain in perpetuity unless Universal ceased payment or closed the land, or if Marvel could prove misuse of its properties. This contract continues to govern the presence of Marvel characters at Universal Orlando today. Construction of Islands of Adventure began in 1997, with Marvel Super Hero Island officially taking shape as one of the park’s six original themed islands. The park soft-opened on March 27, 1999, and held its grand opening on May 28, 1999. Attractions The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (1999): A groundbreaking 3D motion-simulator dark ride set in New York City, blending ride movement, 3D film, and practical effects. Guests enter through the Daily Bugle, where J. Jonah Jameson enlists them as “reporters” to cover Spider-Man’s battle against the Sinister Syndicate, who have threatened the Statue of Liberty with an anti-gravity device. The Incredible Hulk Coaster (1999, refurbished 2016): A high-speed launched roller coaster themed around Bruce Banner’s alter ego. The original queue placed riders inside Banner’s lab; the 2016 overhaul introduced a new storyline featuring General Thaddeus Ross’s gamma-ray experiments, immersing guests in a perilous transformation sequence. Doctor Doom’s Fearfall (1999): A pair of space shot towers where riders become test subjects in Doctor Doom’s scheme to siphon human fear as a weapon against the Fantastic Four. Storm Force Accelatron (2000): A spinning teacup-style ride themed to the X-Men’s Storm. Riders power the “Accelatron” device to help Storm and Professor X channel their abilities in a fight against Magneto. Dining, Shopping & Characters Marvel Super Hero Island also features immersive dining and shopping experiences: Café 4 – themed as the Fantastic Four’s futuristic headquarters, serving Italian-American cuisine in a cafeteria setting. Captain America Diner – inspired by the Avengers, serving burgers, sandwiches, and fast food favorites. Shops – including the Spider-Man Shop (exit for the Spider-Man ride), Marvel Alterniverse Store, and Comic Book Shop. In addition, the area offers character meet-and-greets through “Meet Spider-Man and the Marvel Super Heroes,” where guests can encounter Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, and other Marvel heroes.
