With Nysos scratched due to a foot issue, Saturday’s GI Pacific Classic Stakes looks to be a showdown between MGIW & champion FIERCENESS (City of Light) and MGIW & Classic winner JOURNALISM (Curlin) 🔥 The two headline the now seven-horse field in the featured race at Del Mar, which offers an automatic berth to the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Nov. 1 at the seaside oval.

Fierceness looks to return to his winning form, coming out of a fifth-place finish in the Aug. 2 GI Whitney Stakes last time out. Winner of the GII Alysheba Stakes back in May, the Todd Pletcher trainee was also second in the GI Met Mile in June.

Taking on older horses for the first time, the Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism has been training up to the Pacific Classic since his GI Haskell Stakes victory in July. The GI Preakness Stakes winner also won the GI Santa Anita Derby this season, along with second-place finishes in the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont Stakes.
