How to apply the diminished scale to a dominant sharp 9 chord in a way that instantly gives you that classic jazz sound.

There’s a very specific voicing for a dominant ♯9 chord that guitar players love to use (it’s shown in the video). In this lesson, we’re focusing on a voicing where the ♯9 is the top note.

That top note becomes your point of reference. From there, you can run a half‑whole diminished scale pattern that is extremely common in jazz.

This sound is used by so many great players like Michael Brecker, Oscar Peterson, and many others, as a way to create intense tension before resolving.

We’re specifically using the Half‑Whole Diminished Scale (also called the symmetric diminished scale starting with a half step). Apply this scale pattern over the dominant ♯9 chord, and at the end of the phrase, resolve to the minor i chord.

Think of it as a V7♯9 to Im7 progression, and this scale gives you that classic “jazzy” dominant sound.
