Soft Play, Reading Festival 2025

REVIEW: There’s always been a special bond between Soft Play and Reading.
They’ve played every platform that this festival has placed them on over the years, from the intimate curiosity that defines the Introducing Stage to the ginormous pressure that emanates from the Main Stage. And the thing that each appearance has had in common is how effortlessly the duo have dominated each challenge, bringing unbridled chaos with them, no matter where they are stomping.
This year is no exception.
From the frantic callousness of ‘Fuck The Hi-Hat’ and ‘Girl Fight’ to the sneering heaviness of ‘Punk’s Dead’ and ‘Act Violently’, Isaac and Laurie are firing on all cylinders, revelling in the dust that the plethora of moshers before them are kicking up. It’s primal, punishing and unpredictable, the sort of cacophony of energy that is hard to take your eyes off and near impossible not to get involved in.
Even Kate Nash has come along for the party, snarling her way through ‘Slushie’ with the lads in brilliantly raw fashion.
As ‘Beauty Quest’ and ‘The Hunter’ squeeze out that last bit of energy, the pair chalk this up as another Reading-based victory, a firm and fantastic reminder that no matter what year it is, there’s always room for some good old-fashioned aggro in this field.
