If you didn’t know, my son Sydney is homeschooled. If you did, here’s an update.

We started homeschooling during a time when COVID, anxiety, and ADHD made traditional school nearly impossible for him. He loved the idea of school but started to feel like he was the problem—and I couldn’t let that happen.

School should build our kids up, not leave them unpacking years of stress in their 20s. So we took a leap, focused on rebuilding his confidence, mental resilience, and sense of self.

Years ago, I read that drumming could help kids with ADHD. I signed him up for lessons, and today? He plays drums, bass, and sings. This weekend, Sydney performed with two bands—and watching him grab the mic to sing Iron Man by Black Sabbath had me in tears. 🎶

He’s come so far. From struggling with confidence to playing on stage in front of thousands this summer. Now, he’s leading the charge to go back to school his way—applying to a music and arts-focused school, writing his own essays, and showing up for himself in ways that I know will sustain him for life.

One of our behavioral therapists once said: “There are two ways to help ADHD—medication and motivation.”

Medication didn’t work for us. But motivation? That changed everything.

Sydney, of course I’m proud of you—but what’s most important is that I can see you’re proud of yourself.

You’re proof that when we believe in our kids, they start believing in themselves—and that’s the real magic🎸
