“How are you doing?” I’m asked that every day, yet I haven’t been able to put into words all the things I’m feeling. For the last two months, Hong Kong has gone from bad to marginally better to worse (not to mention the 6+ months of protests before COVID-19). Just when things were starting to look up again, we were hit *hard* last week with a second wave of mostly imported cases and the city is now in lockdown, along with the rest of the world. The fear of being indefinitely unemployed for the foreseeable future is also very real. I always thought situations like these were ones you’d read about in history textbooks and never have to personally experience (I lived through SARS as a teenager, but it was nowhere near as bad or scary). Right now feels like I’m living in a movie or a bad dream that I’m waiting to wake up from.

But while it’s easy to focus on all the negativity around us, it helps to remind ourselves that we, as a humanity, no matter your age or where you’re from, are in this together. I saw something a few days ago about how this isn’t “social distancing”, but instead “physical distancing” because isolation is ironically bringing us closer to one another, whether through silly IG challenges, multi-way video calls, and chats about the things that really matter with friendships that may have fallen to the sidelines over the years.

So if you’re feeling lonely, know that I’m here for you. We might not know what’s going to happen, but we’ll be fine. Let’s turn this around from a time of panic into one of connection and social solidarity ❤️
