I’ve been trying to rewrite my bio over the last few days, and it got me thinking about how my practice and teaching styles have changed over the last five years.

I initially fell into yoga after a childhood of being a gymnast/acrobat wannabe, mostly because non-professional training for age 17+ was rare back in 2005, and since I was already flexible I figured I’d be “good at it”. Yoga became my way of feeding my ego, to be able to put my body into crazy shapes just to say I could and to impress others, and sometimes to punish myself when I was feeling flabby and unfit. And then I discovered acroyoga and was overjoyed to find something that reminded me of the way I moved my body growing up, and was hungry to be able to just do more cool shit.

Needless to say, when I eventually started teaching, my head was in the wrong place as I was focused on creating physically-challenging flows to show off what *I* could do. It didn’t take long for karma to kick me in the ass though, and I started to experience pain and injuries that I’m surprised didn’t manifest sooner with the way I was treating my body. Over the last 3 years I’ve had to learn to put my ego aside and take a step back from an aggressive, goal pose-oriented practice into one that forces me to question every asana and transition: “which muscles are working to get me there? how does it feel in my body? if it doesn’t feel good, what can I do to modify so that it does? am I moving faster because I’m being lazy and want to make it easier?” And more importantly - “why am I doing this pose and are they the right reasons?” Thankfully I’m super grateful to be surrounded by über knowledgeable teachers and healthcare friends that I can turn to when I have questions, so that I can better understand our bodies and how we move.

Going back to the bio, I’m still trying to figure out what unique value I add to my students, but until I figure it out, I just hope to share the knowledge that has transformed the way I see/teach yoga and help people feel good.
